In January we visited Nikko, a very famous and historical town north of Tokyo. There are a lot of temples and ancient buildings
The buildings have many intricate carvings.
(Do you recognize the original "Hear no evil, say no evil, see no evil" monkeys.)

Big guys like these are seen all over Japan guarding the gates.

Look at this gate which has hundreds of very small carvings over the entire structure. (The circled area is enlarged to the right)


This is the tomb of Ieyasu Tokugawa, Japan's first Shogun.
(The book "Shogun" was based loosely on his life.)

We went to see the Famous Shikyo Sacred Bridge, only to find it under construction.
They have some very narrow roads.

Yes, this is a two way road.

We stayed at a Japanese style hotel, The Turtle Annex, on Tatami mats.
