    What are the Sam Books?

  • In 1972, the federally funded Southwest Regional Laboratory for Educational Development and Research (SWRL) and Ginn and Company (A Xerox Educational Company) published this group of early reader books as parts of SWRL's Beginning Reading Program (BRP) . Because it was federally funded, federal law required the program be placed in the public domain in 1977.

    Can I still purchase the Sam Books someplace?

  • In 1993, a team from the Utah State University completed a range of modifications to the original program, incorporating much of the original 1972 Sam books into their Reading For All Learners Program (RALP). The changes were substantive enough to meet federal copyright requirements and allow copyright to be placed on the RALP version. The RALP version can be purchased online at www.iseesam.com. I have never seen the RALP version, but from what I have seen on their web page, it appears that the titles, artwork, and stories of the orgininal 1972 Begininning Reading Program version remains largely intact, but some of the supplemental information is different. These 1993 modifications do not affect the public domain status of the original 1972 version.
